Favorite Winter Book + Activity

  • No Two Snowflakes by Sheree Fitch - descriptive writing, Have students describe something that is very familiar to someone that isn't familiar with it.

 

  • Snowy Day, Ezra Jack Keats-role play with winter clothes, language usage, prediction, self to text connection, writing tool, making predictions and inferring, use it as an interactive read aloud for questioning, connections, and predictions.

The Mitten, Jan Brett- Compare and Contrast to Move Over Rover, Retell-compare other stories with same title, They make a mitten and stuff with animals from the story

Hedgie's Surprise, Jan Brett-Kids go to Jan Brett's website after listening to the book

Snowballs, Lois Ehlert- great visual elements

Trouble with Trolls, Jan Brett-Writing activity-how would you trick a troll

 

Runaway Tortilla, Eric Kimmel- Great compare and contrast with Gingerbread Baby, gingerbread boy stories

 

The Matzo Ball Boy, Lisa Schulman-Great compare and contrast with Gingerbread Baby, gingerbread boy stories

 

Stop That Pickle!, Peter Armour-  Great compare and contrast with Gingerbread Baby, gingerbread boy stories

 

The Gingerbread Baby, Jan Brett- I use this with a Gingerbread unit that I do before winter break.  We read different versions of the Gingerbread Man and do comparing versions of contrasting activities, Venn Diagram with all different versions

Little Polar Bear, Hans de Beer- teach about temperature, use it on a 32ยบ day.  Discuss that polar bears thrive in this temp., Talk about polar bears dying due to global warming
